Derren Brown fails live on Channel 4

3 10 2009

Derren Brown’s television series ended last night in spectacular style with Brown losing £5000 of someone elses money.

Derren Brown’s How To Beat A Casino which went out last night at 9pm could signal the end of his career after his attempt to conquer a roulette wheel dramatically backfired. Brown had met a member of the public on the street and through hypnosis, instructed him to withdraw £5000 from his bank account and give it to him. When the money had been withdrawn and handed to Brown, he made it clear to the victim that he would never remember any of his actions.

Last night, live on Channel 4, Brown rang the member of the public, a man named Ben who clearly did not have any recollection of giving Brown the £5000. The psychic then explained to Ben what he was planning on doing with his money and if it went the correct way, Ben would win £175,000.

The programme was almost uneasy to watch, but Brown had pre-recorded footage of him predicting certain elements such as speed so he could make the correct bet and win the money.

Brown was secretly filming in a secret location in Europe and when inside the casino only two hidden cameras were used to capture what can only be described as one of the greatest TV blunders ever. Ben watched from a directors lorry as Brown placed his £5000 on a number on the game board. I believe it was black number eight. But Brown had got it wrong, he was one out, the ball landed in the slot next to what he had predicted. That was Ben’s money gone and Brown’s reputation.

The programme ended with a brief, embarrassed apology from Brown and the director telling Ben he would get his money back. Roll the credits and signal the end of the show, the end of the series and maybe the end of Derren Brown.

ALL THE SMALL THINGS

BBC ONE 9:00 PM

This new six-part drama is the BBC’s scheduling replacement for Mistresses and is written by Debbie Horsfield. She has brought up top quality drama like Cutting It in the past. This series sees Sarah Lancashire play a choir member. The choir is conducted by her husband. Lancashire’s character, Esther Caddick is a mother of three but her world is rocked when Layla (Sarah Alexander) the sexy soprano turns up and not only steals the limelight but also Esther’s husband. As the pair split, Esther creates her own choir and works in direct competition with her husband Michael (Neil Pearson). It looks like a promising new drama and with not many around at the moment, it could become must-see television.

The episode titled ‘Locked Away’ does exactly what it says on the tin. With Jac and Joseph locked away in a quarantined operating theatre the pair confess their true feeling for one another. They are both carrying a potentially life-threatening contamination a patient has been carrying. They are determined to save the patient however but as two members of staff collapse, the ward is evacuated. Specialist teams are brought in to contract the cause of the contamination but with Jac and Joseph locked up, will they admit their true feeling and will Joseph break everything off with Faye (Patsy Kensit)?

THE WIRE

BBC TWO 11:20 PM

The critically acclaimed US drama is heading to BBC Two. The first run, a 13-part series is set in Baltimore. It tells the story of a drugs and murder police investigation. Opinions come from the view of the law and their targets. I think that BBC Two have messed up the scheduling of this a bit. It is on so late and I don’t think viewing figures are going to be that strong. Nevertheless I am sure it is worth a look.

DISPATCHES: THE TROUBLE WITH BORIS

CHANNEL 4 8:00 PM

Boris has been the Mayor of London for 11 months but has he done any good? This programme looks back at the last 11 months and forward to the next few years to see if he can get us out of the economic crisis. Does he have the strategy? And when will those bendy buses be gone? Personally, I quite like them.

TROPHY KIDS

CHANNEL 4 9:00 PM

I have seen a few cases like this before and the programme would be better suited with a name like ‘Pushy Parents.’ The Cutting Edge documentary profiles the parents that give up jobs in order to ensure their children achieve sporting success. Some cash in on their savings in a desperate bid for success. But can parents go a bit too far sometimes and do the children always share the same passion for success as their mums and dads?

Join Holly and Phillip for the live final. Tonight from 6:55pm on ITV1 (Source: Guardian)

ITV1 6:55 PM

Ray, Donal and Jessica battle it out on the ice tonight to impress the judges and the public and become the Dancing On Ice 2009 Champion. Earlier in the week, Jayne Torvill claimed that Quinn was quite vulnerable but he still stands as the favourite to win. Jessica has stayed consistent all the way through the competition with Donal becoming one of the most improved skaters.

After one is eliminated, the two remaining skaters will dance to Bolero, a dance Torvill and Dean won gold for 25 years ago. This is the ultimate challenge and the judges along with Torvill and Dean will be watching their every move. The three finalists will also perform their favourite dance of the series and one which involves flying through the air. But at the end of the day it is up to the harshest critics to decide the winner, us the public.

Join Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby tonight for the live final and don’t forget to vote for your favourite!

THE SECRET MILLIONAIRE

CHANNEL 4 9:00 PM

It has returned to our screens for an eight-part run and tonight the secret millionaire, known as Kevin Morley visits Haringey in North London where housing problems are increasingly growing in the area. Can he transform the lives of some of Haringey’s residents? Being an entrepreneur and former Managing Director of Rover, I am sure that he will help in making a difference to the ever increasing housing problem in Haringey. I can’t wait to see the look on the residents faces when he reveals his true identity.

CHRIS MOYLES’ QUIZ NIGHT

Will the radio genius pull it off on TV? (Source: London Is Free)

CHANNEL 4 10:00 PM

Channel 4 say in the advert that they have finally got him and yes they have. Tonight sees the launch of Chris Moyles’ news quiz show. I am imagining it to be a bit like 8 Out Of 10 Cats but I could be wrong. Chris is a funny guy but I have my reservations about him doing his own TV show. I am willing to give him a chance though and he has some great guests on tonight. Joining him will be, Mark Ronson, X Factor judge Louis Walsh and EastEnder Barbara Windsor.

DAMAGES

BBC ONE 10:20 PM

This series is getting better and better and Glenn Close is such a brilliant actress as corrupt lawyer Patty Hewes. Tonight she appears on a TV interview in order to accuse Walter Kendrick of murder. But does she have all the evidence she needs and I am itching to find out who Ellen Parsons shoots at the end!

ANT AND DEC’S SATURDAY NIGHT TAKEAWAY

ITV1 7;45 PM

It’s the last Takeaway of the series this week so why not order a takeaway and stay in to see who will escape from Takeaway prison for the last time. The three remaining celebs compete to break free. High School Musical star Zac Efron takes over the sound booth and Lily Allen also drops in to perform her new single Not Fair, which you can watch above. Ant -v- Dec The Teams comes to a conclusion with an all singing all dancing finale. Musical toadstools is also back and a member of the audience will be given the chance to win the ads. Make sure you tune in and join the Geordie duo for more laughs and entertainment.

FILM – NOTTING HILL

ITV1 9:00 PM

Last week, ITV1 showed About A Boy and this week it’s Notting Hill. Must be Hugh Grant season or something. They also had Bridget Jones on ITV2 the other night. Anyway back to tonight. Notting Hill is one of those rom-coms that makes you proud to be British. Much like Love Actually and Four Wedding and A Funeral. The film follows Hugh Grant who is a divorced bookshop owner. He falls in love with a Hollywood star played by Julia Roberts but can he win her heart? Grant’s interest in a media story almost brings their relationship to the end but I think we all know that films like this have a happy ending. Look out for other great cast members like, Dylan Moran and The Vicar of Dibley’s Emma Chambers. Notting Hill is a feel-good film for a Saturday evening.

FILM – GOSFORD PARK

CHANNEL 4 9:00 PM

It is unusual for me to have two films in this section but there isn’t much else on television tonight. Gosford Park is Channel 4′s offering tonight. The film, released in 2oo1 stars Maggie Smith, Alan Bates and Michael Gambon. The plot is based around a murder that takes place in a country house in the 1930′s. It had very good reviews when it came out and if the rom-com is not your cup of tea, why not give Gosford Park a look. Some may have seen it already, I haven’t personally but think it may be the one I will be watching tonight.

Ronnie Corbett will join Graham tonight (Source: Telegraph)

BBC TWO 10:00 PM

I never used to like Graham Norton but I think that since he defected from Channel 4 to the BBC he has changed. His chat show is one of those shows I think that you do not watch religiously but once you put it on you find yourself watching it and actually enjoying it because he is quite funny and his interaction with the studio audience is brilliant. Tonight he is joined by the legend that is Ronnie Corbett and one of the funniest men on TV, Ricky Gervais for some more top quality entertainment and comedy.

WENDY RICHARD: TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH

Wendy Richard will shed some light on chemotherapy treatment (Source: Virgin Media)

BBC ONE 8:00 PM

After losing her battle with cancer last month, this documentary follows Wendy as she comes to terms with chemotherapy treatment. She was terrified of it and what it would involve but decided to have it after the terrible disease struck her for the third time. In this film she helps those who are also living in fear not only of cancer but chemotherapy treatment and sheds some light on what it involves and how it works. Wendy did not intend on having this televised but John Burns her husband insists that it was what she would have wanted. Throughout the 30 minute progamme, viewers will follow her journey with the treatment, something that before now scared her deeply.

RED RIDING

CHANNEL 4 9:00 PM

This crime thriller come drama bows out this week and we are taken to 1983. Tonight our attention is focused on cop Maurice Jobson (David Morrissey) who can see similarites between the case of a missing schoolgirl in 1983 and that of a murder that took place in 1974. The woman in question, Clare, was murdered in 1974 but is the man convicted the right person? He can’t be because the real murderer is on the loose and has kidnapped another girl. Could it be the same missing schoolgirl and will the cops find him in time? This very unsettling drama reaches a very dramatic conclusion and I am sure will have many hooked.

No cast cull at Hollyoaks

16 03 2009

Sharon Marshall has confirmed that Hollyoaks bosses have no plans to swing the axe at ten unlucky cast members.

The news yesterday was that between April and October, ten cast members would leave the show. However it has today been made clear that this will not be happening. Chris Fountain (Justin) and Jamie Lomas (Warren) will still be departing the Channel 4 soap this year but do not worry the rest of your favourite characters are safe…for now!

You know what Hollyoaks is like though, I am sure next year with the exception of a few there will be a totally new cast again.

THAT MITCHELL AND WEBB GLIMPSE

BBC TWO 9:45 PM

Most of you are probably wondering why it is not called That Mitchell and Webb Look. There is a simple answer to that question, the show only lasts 15 minutes. I think that BBC Two needed to bridge a gap and so have decided to compile a small nugget of goodness in the form of David Mitchell and Robert Webb. Now, if you watched Let’s Dance then I am sure it is going to take you a while to brush the image of Webb in that leotard dancing to Flashdance. This bitesize edition does however compile some of their best bits for your viewing pleasure just without the leotard…

FILM: GANGS OF NEW YORK

CHANNEL 4 10:00 PM

It is not often that I recommend a film, in fact I don’t think I have yet but this one is not to be missed. I am sure you have seen it many times before but hey, what else is on? It’s gang warfare on another level with Leonardo di Caprio and Daniel Day-Lewis taking the lead roles in this Martin Scorsese epic. The film, if you didn’t already know centres around events in the 1860′s when Amsterdam Vallon (Di Caprio) returns to Manhattan to avenge his father who was killed in a gang fight 5 years earlier. Will he be successful? Those of you who have seen the film know the answer. Tune in tonight for three hours of top quality film.

EASTENDERS

BBC ONE 8:00 PM

Is Peggy going to be the next councillor? Not if tonights episode is anything to go by. Having prepared a speech and spoken those wise words to the great Walford residents, the pressure of her campaigning finally catches up with her and she collapses. We know that Archie has been trying to dissuade her from standing as councillor but we all know, nobody tells Peggy Mitchell what to do. Could this turn in events suddenly change her mind and will she start paying more attention to her wedding? Also tonight Danielle takes revenge on Ronnie, by telling her she’s her daughter. Only joking you are going to have to wait a bit longer for that…

‘Oaks bosses swing the axe at 10

Hollyoaks and the great cast cull (Source: images.fanpop.com)

Hollyoaks and the great cast cull (Source: images.fanpop.com)

Hollyoaks bosses are to axe ten characters from the show between April and October. The shakeup  will see some of the most well-known stars of the show face the chop.

Last week, Chris Fountain (Justin) and Jamie Lomas (Warren) announced that they have quit the Channel 4 soap. So, who is going to go? Could another member of the McQueens be departing Cheshire for good, or maybe Tony will decide to move on…

What I want to know is whether they will go out with a bang or all leave in a black cab and live happily ever after somewhere else. Hollyoaks in the last two years has been recongnised as a serious British soap and not just a teen series. It swept the board at the British Soap Awards last year, but has since deteriorated in quality over the last few months. Could the diminishing characters add to this deterioration? I hope not, but it will give the soap a whole new image…again!
