What To Watch – Monday 30th March

30 03 2009

THE WIRE

BBC TWO 11:20 PM

The critically acclaimed US drama is heading to BBC Two. The first run, a 13-part series is set in Baltimore. It tells the story of a drugs and murder police investigation. Opinions come from the view of the law and their targets. I think that BBC Two have messed up the scheduling of this a bit. It is on so late and I don’t think viewing figures are going to be that strong. Nevertheless I am sure it is worth a look.

DISPATCHES: THE TROUBLE WITH BORIS

CHANNEL 4 8:00 PM

Boris has been the Mayor of London for 11 months but has he done any good? This programme looks back at the last 11 months and forward to the next few years to see if he can get us out of the economic crisis. Does he have the strategy? And when will those bendy buses be gone? Personally, I quite like them.

John Simpson discusses his job on the front line (Source: Telegraph)

BBC TWO 9:00 PM

In the first of a three-part run, war reporter John Simpson takes yachtsman Robin Knox-Johnston and explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes to one of the many places he has reported from and discusses his profession. This looks like a very interesting series as three very different but thought provoking professions are exposed in ways that we rarely see. What will the other two think of the dangerous situations Simpson has been in and what will they all have in store for one another when they discuss their professions?

The two begin to bond but when Bianca (Patsy Palmer) returns home and finds Janine babysitting she hits the roof. After all she did catch Tiffany being bundled into one of Janine’s clients cars last night, so I am not surprised. But with Bianca reading the riot act will Janine be able to keep quiet or will she blurt out Ricky and Bianca’s secret?

THE REAL SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON

Will the families survive? (Source: Ricochet)

Will the families survive? (Source: Ricochet)

BBC ONE 9:00 PM

A new four-part series follows families as they experience life away from home and their luxuries. Tonight the programme follows the Dyes family from Essex. They are stranded on the remote island of Anariki in the North Pacific. Will they be able to survive with the supplies they have, and will they be able to make a home out of what the island has to offer. I am sure some will crack under the pressure. It seems like a more up-market Shipwrecked to me.

THE GRAHAM NORTON SHOW

Ronnie Corbett will join Graham tonight (Source: Telegraph)

Ronnie Corbett will join Graham tonight (Source: Telegraph)

BBC TWO 10:00 PM

I never used to like Graham Norton but I think that since he defected from Channel 4 to the BBC he has changed. His chat show is one of those shows I think that you do not watch religiously but once you put it on you find yourself watching it and actually enjoying it because he is quite funny and his interaction with the studio audience is brilliant. Tonight he is joined by the legend that is Ronnie Corbett and one of the funniest men on TV, Ricky Gervais for some more top quality entertainment and comedy.

In this film she helps those who are also living in fear not only of cancer but chemotherapy treatment and sheds some light on what it involves and how it works. Wendy did not intend on having this televised but John Burns her husband insists that it was what she would have wanted. Throughout the 30 minute progamme, viewers will follow her journey with the treatment, something that before now scared her deeply.

RED RIDING

CHANNEL 4 9:00 PM

This crime thriller come drama bows out this week and we are taken to 1983. Tonight our attention is focused on cop Maurice Jobson (David Morrissey) who can see similarites between the case of a missing schoolgirl in 1983 and that of a murder that took place in 1974. The woman in question, Clare, was murdered in 1974 but is the man convicted the right person? He can’t be because the real murderer is on the loose and has kidnapped another girl. Could it be the same missing schoolgirl and will the cops find him in time? This very unsettling drama reaches a very dramatic conclusion and I am sure will have many hooked.

THAT MITCHELL AND WEBB GLIMPSE

BBC TWO 9:45 PM

Most of you are probably wondering why it is not called That Mitchell and Webb Look. There is a simple answer to that question, the show only lasts 15 minutes. I think that BBC Two needed to bridge a gap and so have decided to compile a small nugget of goodness in the form of David Mitchell and Robert Webb. Now, if you watched Let’s Dance then I am sure it is going to take you a while to brush the image of Webb in that leotard dancing to Flashdance. This bitesize edition does however compile some of their best bits for your viewing pleasure just without the leotard…

FILM: GANGS OF NEW YORK

CHANNEL 4 10:00 PM

It is not often that I recommend a film, in fact I don’t think I have yet but this one is not to be missed. I am sure you have seen it many times before but hey, what else is on? It’s gang warfare on another level with Leonardo di Caprio and Daniel Day-Lewis taking the lead roles in this Martin Scorsese epic. The film, if you didn’t already know centres around events in the 1860′s when Amsterdam Vallon (Di Caprio) returns to Manhattan to avenge his father who was killed in a gang fight 5 years earlier. Will he be successful? Those of you who have seen the film know the answer. Tune in tonight for three hours of top quality film.

Could this turn in events suddenly change her mind and will she start paying more attention to her wedding? Also tonight Danielle takes revenge on Ronnie, by telling her she’s her daughter. Only joking you are going to have to wait a bit longer for that…

LET’S DANCE FOR COMIC RELIEF

BBC ONE 7:15 PM

Tonight is the final. Who will be victorious and who will fall at the final hurdle? Will Robert Webb’s classic dance to Flashdance be the favourite or maybe Jo Brand’s impression of Britney Spears will come out on top? There are six acts competitng for the title of Let’s Dance champion. As ever Claudia Winkleman and Steve Jones will be there to host the show and get all the backstage reactions. The judging panel tonight will be made up of Anton Du Beke, and guest judge Denise Van Outen. Make sure you tune in to see who wins as the six remaining acts battle it out with dances from stage and screen.

COMIC RELIEF TOP OF THE POPS

BBC TWO 10:00 PM

If you missed it last night because you were wacthing the news, well here is your chance to catch last nights Top Of The Pops Comic Relief Special. Performances from Franz Ferdinand, Take That, U2 and Oasis make up a fraction of the show. The main stars of course are Rob Brydon, Ruth Jones and Sir Tom Jones who sing the Comic Relief Single, Barry Islands In The Stream. Fearne and Reggie are joined by Noel Fielding, Dawn French, Jonathan Ross and Claudia Winkleman. And do not forget to check out Davina McCall and Claudia dancing at the end of the show. I am pretty sure Dawn French joins in too. This is Comic Relief at its best.

COMIC RELIEF THE BEST BITS

BBC TWO 10:35 PM

How they have managed to cram the best bits into a 15 minute show, I will never understand but the Beeb have managed to do it. Here is your chance to see some of the best bits of last night eight hour telethon. But what will be on it? Will we see French and Saunders along with Joanna Lumley turn into the cast of Mamma Mia? Or what about Smithy’s team talk to the England football team? I cannot imagine that they are going to show full clips but it will be 15 minutes worth of quality entertainment as we relive some of the funniest, most poignant moments of people doing things that are funny for money.

Gavin and Stacey to end after third series

10 03 2009

Writer and actress Ruth Jones has just confirmed that there will not be a fourth series of BBC hit comedy Gavin and Stacey. Jones, 42 who plays Nessa in the show told the Loose Women that the third series will be the final one.

She told Jackie Brambles, Carol McGiffin, Denise Welch and Jane McDonald that her and co-writer James Corden did not intend to write a second series. They did want to do a special which was broadcast at Christmas and was a ratings winner.

The growing popularity has meant that the sitcom has gone from BBC Three to BBC One. It is repeated on BBC Three every week and no matter how much I watch it, I find it just as funny.

Jones was also on the show to promote her Comic Relief single that she performs with co-star Rob Brydon and Sir Tom Jones. Barry Islands In The Stream is out now and available for download. Proceeds go to Comic Relief. Don’t miss them performing on Top Of The Pops, BBC Two 10:00 p.m.

MISTRESSES

BBC ONE 9:00 PM

Following the success of the first series, Mistresses in back on BBC One. Now into the third episode, the second series really is not disappointing. Tonight sees Trudi (Sharon Small) discover the extent of her fiancés (Richard) deceit. There is so much going on in tonight’s episode, I do not want to give it away too much so make sure you follow the lead of five million other viewers and tune into Mistresses tonight. If you have missed any of the previous episodes, you can watch them on BBC iPlayer

FREAKY EATERS

BBC THREE 8:00 PM

How interesting can it be to study the eating habits of one person? Well for lots of people I am sure this programme will appear extremely time-wasting. However, Freaky Eaters is not just about that. It is about offering advice and helping those who have a one-track mind when it comes to food. Tonight we follow Tom, a 26-year-old beans and chips fanatic. That is all he eats. Can he be persuaded to change his ways? Tune in at 8 to find out.

HORIZON

BBC TWO 9:00 PM

If Mistresses is not your thing then why not try Horizon. This episode looks bizarrely interesting because it begs the question, why do we not venture into the outside world naked? It is a simple question. Many of us will freely walk around naked indoors but why not outdoors in public. Is it because we see it as being obscene or do we just feel uncomfortable with it? Tonight for the purpose of televisual experiment, eight brave members of the public put nudity to the test and bare all. Please remember though that these test are being conducted for psychological and physical purposes.
